KOMPAN Play Institute - Play for All

Every child has the right to leisure and play. Regardless of their age, nationality, gender, skin colour, social and religious background, physical and intellectual abilities, children have the right to play and to play with others. This has always been part of KOMPAN's philosophy and design approach.

United Nations' Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has been widely signed over the last years. The convention states that "(...) children with disabilities should have full enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms on an equal basis with other children".

For the design and planning of public areas, among others playgrounds, this can be a considerable task. The Convention underlines that reasonable accommodation should be made. As a specification of this, a universal design approach is recommended:

"Universal design" means the design of products , environments, programs and services to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. "Universal design" shall not exclude assistive devices for particular groups of persons with disabilities where this is needed."

To KOMPAN this is welcome news as universal design has been part of our design philosophy for more than 30 years.
